In the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the surface of things, missing the deeper truths that lie beneath. The ancient wisdom of the Tao Te Ching, attributed to Lao-tzu, offers profound insights that can help us reconnect with these deeper truths.

Embracing the Mystery of the Tao

One of its most famous quotes beautifully encapsulates this wisdom:

"The tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal Name. The unnamable is the eternally real. Naming is the origin of all particular things. Free from desire, I realize the mystery. Caught in desire, I see only the manifestations. Yet mystery and manifestations arise from the same source. This source is called darkness. Darkness within darkness. The gateway to all understanding."

~ Rewritten by Sun Zuka from Stephen Mitchell English Version of the Tao Te Ching by Lao-tzu - The rewrite is in first person to show nonduality. There are no “you”, “she/her”, “he/him”, “men/women”, “masters”, etc. There’s no better way to express that we are all one than to write with “Me”, “Myself”, and “I”.

At first glance, these words might seem enigmatic, but they invite us to explore a deeper understanding of life and existence. Let’s break down this quote and see how it can guide us in our daily lives.

The quote begins by reminding us that the ultimate reality, the true essence of life (the Tao), cannot be fully captured by words or names. Words are just symbols and labels, and while they help us communicate, they fall short of expressing the full depth of reality. This invites us to look beyond the surface and embrace the mystery of what cannot be named or described.

Naming things is how we create distinctions in the world. It’s how we categorize and make sense of our surroundings. However, this process can also limit our understanding. When we get caught up in our desires and labels, we only see the surface – the manifestations of things. True understanding comes when we let go of these desires and look deeper into the nature of existence.

The quote also highlights that both the mystery and the manifestations of life arise from the same source, which is often referred to as “darkness.” This darkness symbolizes the unknown, the mysterious aspect of life that is beyond our comprehension. It is within this darkness that true understanding lies.

By embracing the mystery, we open ourselves to a deeper connection with life. This means accepting that not everything can be understood or controlled. It means finding peace in the unknown and allowing ourselves to be present in each moment without the need to categorize or desire.

The wisdom of the Tao Te Ching reminds us that the ultimate reality is beyond words and names. By letting go of our desires and embracing the mystery of life, we can find a deeper sense of peace and understanding. Simply being more mindful in our daily activities, we can carry this wisdom with us, allowing it to guide us toward a more meaningful and connected existence.

Embrace the mystery.

Let go of the need to understand everything.

And in doing so, discover the profound peace that lies within the darkness of the unknown.

Remember, walk through life as love.
